Tony Waddington is Stoke City’s greatest manager and the architect of the club’s golden era in the late 1960s and 1970s. Taking charge in 1960, he transformed Stoke from a Second Division side into a respected top-flight team. Waddington built around legendary figures such as Gordon Banks, John Ritchie, Jimmy Greenhoff, Mike Pejic and Alan Hudson. His greatest achievement came in 1972, when Stoke won the League Cup — the club’s first major trophy — beating Chelsea at Wembley. Known for combining physical strength with technical quality, Waddington’s Stoke regularly challenged strong First Division sides and created one of the most admired periods in the club’s history.
