Denis Smith became one of Stoke City’s great servants after making his debut in 1968, developing into a fearless, uncompromising centre-back whose bravery and commitment made him a favourite at the Victoria Ground; he played in Stoke’s greatest triumph, the 1972 League Cup final victory over Chelsea, and remained a central figure through the club’s strong 1970s period, despite suffering an extraordinary succession of serious injuries during his career; Smith made more than 490 appearances for Stoke before retiring in 1982, with his toughness, loyalty and willingness to play through injury establishing him as one of the defining Potters players of his generation.
