Gordon Banks is one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history and a legendary Stoke City figure. Joining from Leicester in 1967, Banks brought world-class quality to Tony Waddington’s rising Stoke side. He helped Stoke win the 1972 League Cup, the club’s first major trophy, and became famous worldwide for his spectacular save from Pelé at the 1970 World Cup while playing for England. At Stoke, Banks combined outstanding reflexes, positioning and calm authority. His career was sadly shortened by a car accident in 1972 that damaged his eyesight, but he remains one of the greatest players ever to represent the club.
