Stoke City’s 1972 League Cup victory remains the club’s greatest achievement. Under Tony Waddington, Stoke defeated Chelsea FC 2–1 at Wembley to win the first major trophy in their history. Terry Conroy opened the scoring before Chelsea equalised through Peter Osgood. Late in the match, veteran midfielder George Eastham scored the winner, sealing a famous day for the club. The side included major Stoke figures such as Gordon Banks, John Ritchie and Jimmy Greenhoff. The triumph became the defining moment of Stoke’s celebrated 1970s era.
