Noel Campbell was one of the brightest St Patrick’s Athletic players to emerge in a difficult period for the club. A gifted midfielder, he played for the Saints from 1966 to 1971, scoring 26 goals in 87 league appearances and finishing as their top scorer in both 1968–69 and 1969–70. He also scored twice away to Bordeaux in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and won his first Republic of Ireland cap while still with St Pat’s. Although his Saints spell did not bring major silverware, it launched a trailblazing career that later made him the first Irishman to play in the Bundesliga.
