Willie (William Douglas) Telfer was a tough, “robust” centre-half who became a major St Mirren figure. Born in Larkhall (26 Oct 1925), he joined Saints from junior side Burnbank Athletic in 1943 and went on to make over 500 appearances in the black-and-white stripes before leaving in 1957. His form earned him a Scotland cap and several Scottish League XI games. He moved to Rangers for £10,000 (Nov 1957), later played for Queen of the South and Hamilton Accies, and managed Albion Rovers (1962–65).
