Sir Alex Ferguson’s first big managerial success came at St Mirren, where he took charge in October 1974 (aged 32) after a short spell at East Stirlingshire. He turned a struggling, lower-division side into a young, aggressive, attacking team and delivered the Scottish First Division title in 1976–77, winning promotion to the top flight. That squad helped launch careers for players like Billy Stark, Tony Fitzpatrick and Frank McGarvey.
