Sir Alex Ferguson’s managerial rise gathered momentum at St Mirren, where he took charge in 1974 aged just 32 and transformed a struggling Second Division club with an exciting young team; featuring talents such as Tony Fitzpatrick, Billy Stark and Frank McGarvey, Ferguson led Saints to the 1976/77 First Division title and promotion to Scotland’s top flight, establishing the demanding standards and talent-development skills that would later define his extraordinary career, before his controversial dismissal in 1978 brought a hugely influential spell in Paisley to an abrupt end.
