Hugh “Shug” Murray is a modern St Mirren institution: a homegrown central midfielder who broke through in 1996–97 under Tony Fitzpatrick and went on to become the club’s record appearance holder. Sky Sports reported he’d played 467 times for the Buddies by 2012, including a club-record 402 league appearances. He was part of title-winning squads in 1999–2000 and 2005–06 (First Division) and also won the 2005 Challenge Cup. He was an inaugural St Mirren Hall of Fame inductee (2004).
