Simo Valakari became St Johnstone head coach on 1 October 2024, arriving from Riga FC and replacing Craig Levein on a deal running to summer 2027. A former Motherwell and Derby midfielder, he was hired to drive a clear culture and “all in it together” mindset at McDiarmid Park. In 2024–25 he guided Saints to a Scottish Cup semi-final (after beating Livingston). Despite that run, St Johnstone were relegated in May 2025, with owner Adam Webb publicly backing Valakari to lead a promotion push.
