James Ward-Prowse was one of Southampton’s defining modern players and the club’s midfield leader for much of the 2010s and early 2020s. A product of the academy, he played for Saints from 2011 to 2023, becoming captain and the team’s emotional as well as technical focal point. He made 410 appearances in all competitions and 344 league appearances for Southampton, scoring 55 goals overall and 49 in the league. His set-piece quality became his trademark: by February 2023 he had scored 17 direct Premier League free-kicks, just one short of David Beckham’s record. Calm, durable, and consistent, Ward-Prowse was one of Southampton’s most important Premier League-era figures.
