Virgil van Dijk had a relatively short Southampton spell, from 2015 to the start of 2018, but he quickly became one of the club’s standout modern defenders. Signed from Celtic in September 2015, he made 67 Premier League appearances and scored 4 league goals for Saints. He brought authority, pace, aerial strength, and calmness on the ball, and in 2015–16 he was voted Southampton Player of the Season. He also became club captain during the 2016–17 campaign before an ankle injury disrupted his year. His time ended awkwardly amid transfer drama, but at his best he looked like a top-level centre-back even before his move to Liverpool.
