Russell Martin’s Southampton spell was short but significant. Appointed in June 2023 after relegation, he imposed a possession-heavy style that at times looked risky but gave Saints a clear identity. Southampton went on a club-record 25-game unbeaten run between September 2023 and February 2024, then beat Leeds United 1–0 in the Championship play-off final on 26 May 2024 to win promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt. He even signed a new contract in July 2024, but the top-flight season went badly and he was sacked on 15 December 2024 with Southampton bottom. Martin restored momentum, but not lasting stability.
