Matt Le Tissier was Southampton’s great modern icon and one of the most naturally gifted players in English football. He spent his entire top-level club career with Saints from 1986 to 2002, scoring 161 league goals in 443 league appearances and more than 200 goals in all competitions. He was an attacking midfielder with extraordinary technique, famous for spectacular long-range goals, perfect balance, and remarkable penalty-taking. Nicknamed “Le God” by Southampton fans, he often carried the team creatively and emotionally through difficult Premier League seasons. He also became the first midfielder to score 100 Premier League goals, which underlined just how unusual and gifted a player he was.
