Matt Le Tissier was Southampton’s great modern icon and one of the most naturally gifted players in English football. He spent his entire professional club career with Saints from 1986 to 2002, scoring 161 league goals in 443 league appearances, which left him as the club’s second-highest scorer. He was an attacking midfielder with extraordinary technique, famous for spectacular long-range goals and remarkable penalty-taking. Southampton note he scored 100 Premier League goals and provided 64 assists, making him the first midfielder to reach 100 in the competition. Nicknamed “Le God,” he carried Saints creatively through difficult years and became the defining player of the Dell era.
