Rickie Lambert was the driving force behind Southampton’s rise from League One back to the Premier League. Signed in 2009, he became the side’s goalscoring focal point and emotional leader, combining penalty-box finishing with excellent hold-up play and set-piece quality. He scored 117 goals in 235 appearances for Saints, including 27 league goals in the 2011–12 Championship promotion season. He then proved he could do it in the top flight too, scoring 15 Premier League goals in 2012–13 and 13 more in 2013–14. More than the numbers, Lambert symbolised Southampton’s climb: local-feeling, relentless, and crucial to one of the club’s best modern rebuilds.
