Southampton’s 2024 promotion sent them straight back to the Premier League at the first attempt. Russell Martin’s side finished fourth in the Championship, then came through the play-offs, beating West Bromwich Albion in the semi-finals before defeating Leeds United 1–0 in the final at Wembley on 26 May 2024. Adam Armstrong scored the winning goal in the final, sealing promotion and becoming one of the defining figures of the campaign. It mattered because Southampton had been relegated only a year earlier, so the club avoided a long rebuild in the second tier. Promotion also validated Martin’s possession-based style in a division that can be difficult to escape.
