Southampton’s 1976 season is remembered for the greatest upset in the club’s history. Saints were a Second Division side, yet on 1 May 1976 they beat First Division Manchester United 1–0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup, the first major trophy in the club’s history. Bobby Stokes scored the winner in the 83rd minute, with Lawrie McMenemy’s team built on experience, spirit, and belief rather than star power. Southampton had finished sixth in the Second Division, so nobody expected them to lift the cup. That victory became the defining moment of the club’s modern identity and still stands as one of English football’s classic underdog triumphs.
