Southampton produced one of the great FA Cup final upsets on 1 May 1976, beating Manchester United 1–0 at Wembley to win the first major trophy in the club’s history; managed by Lawrie McMenemy, Second Division Saints entered as underdogs against Tommy Docherty’s First Division United but defended superbly before Bobby Stokes raced onto Jim McCalliog’s pass and slid the decisive 83rd-minute goal beyond Alex Stepney; captain Peter Rodrigues lifted the trophy after a famous victory featuring Southampton greats including Mick Channon, Peter Osgood and Nick Holmes, securing a landmark triumph that remains one of the proudest moments in Saints history.
