Chris Rutherford was one of Sligo Rovers’ most respected defenders and a key figure in one of the club’s great eras. The Liverpool-born centre-back joined in 1975 after leaving Cardiff City and became a mainstay at The Showgrounds through the late 1970s and early 1980s. He scored in the decisive win over Shamrock Rovers that helped seal the 1976–77 league title, and he was part of the squad that won Sligo’s first ever FAI Cup in 1983, although injury forced him off early in the final. He later entered the club’s Hall of Fame, which fits his standing as a long-serving, admired Rovers defender.
