Owen Heary was one of the key defenders in Shelbourne’s modern golden era. A tough, reliable right-back, he joined in 1998 and went on to make 274 league appearances for the club, a record total for Shelbourne in the League of Ireland. During that spell he won five league titles — 1999–2000, 2001–02, 2003, 2004 and 2006 — plus the 1999–2000 FAI Cup, making him central to one of the most successful periods in Shels history. Individually, he was voted PFAI Players’ Player of the Year in 2001–02. In simple terms, Heary was a cornerstone of Shelbourne’s title-winning side.
