Shelbourne’s 1992 story is mainly about winning the 1991–92 League of Ireland Premier Division, a major title in the club’s modern history. Shels finished top of the 12-team division and qualified for the European Cup, ending a long wait for league success. The momentum then carried into 1992–93, when they remained in the title race right to the end before finishing in the three-way championship play-offs that ultimately went Cork City’s way. So, in simple terms, 1992 was a year when Shelbourne re-established themselves at the top of Irish football: first by becoming champions, then by proving it was not a one-off.
