Alan Woodward became a Sheffield United legend during a remarkable career at Bramall Lane from 1964 to 1978, making over 600 appearances and scoring more than 150 goals; nicknamed “Woody,” the powerful right winger was renowned for his explosive shooting, crossing and ability to score directly from corners, forming a memorable partnership with Tony Currie; Woodward played a major role in United’s promotion to the First Division in 1970–71 and the excellent side that briefly led the top flight the following season, while his consistency and longevity made him a huge supporters’ favourite; his appearance and goalscoring records place him among the greatest players in Sheffield United history.
