Alan Woodward was one of Sheffield United’s greatest attacking players and remains the club’s leading post-war scorer. A right winger with a ferocious shot and exceptional dead-ball delivery, he played for the Blades from the mid-1960s to 1978 and scored 158 league goals in 538 league appearances. Sheffield United described him as “one of its greatest sons” after his death in 2015, while wider accounts remember him for scoring directly from corners and for his explosive style from the right flank. He was a central figure in the side that won promotion to the First Division in 1970–71 and remains one of Bramall Lane’s standout modern-era legends.
