Dave Bassett managed Sheffield United from 1988 to 1995, transforming the club after taking over in the Third Division and remarkably winning back-to-back promotions to reach the top flight by 1990; nicknamed “Harry,” Bassett built a direct, aggressive and fiercely competitive side around players such as Brian Deane, Tony Agana and Alan Kelly, establishing the Blades in the First Division and then the newly formed Premier League; Deane famously scored the first-ever Premier League goal in 1992 under Bassett, while United also reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1992–93; relegation followed dramatically in 1994, and Bassett departed the following year after seven memorable seasons at Bramall Lane.
