John Harris is one of the most important figures in Sheffield United history, both as a player and a manager. As a player, he was a tough, committed centre-half who made over 400 appearances for the Blades between 1937 and 1957 (with his career interrupted by World War II). He later became manager in 1959 and led United to promotion to the old First Division in 1960–61, establishing a competitive top-flight side. Harris returned for a second spell as manager in 1967, guiding the club to another promotion in 1970–71. Known for discipline and organisation, he is regarded as one of the club’s defining leaders and a major figure in its mid-20th-century success.
