Brian Deane was one of Sheffield United’s most important modern strikers. Signed from Doncaster Rovers in 1988, he helped drive the club from the Third Division back to the top flight with successive promotions in 1988–89 and 1989–90. He scored 82 league goals in 197 league appearances for the Blades and became part of club folklore on 15 August 1992, when he scored the first ever Premier League goal in a 2–1 win over Manchester United at Bramall Lane. That moment made him famous, but at Sheffield United he was more than a trivia answer: he was a powerful, central figure in their rise.
