Brian Deane was one of Sheffield United’s most important modern strikers. Signed from Doncaster Rovers in 1988, he helped drive the club’s rise from the Third Division to the top flight with back-to-back promotions in 1988–89 and 1989–90. Across his main Blades spell he scored 82 league goals in 197 appearances, and he remains best known for scoring the first ever Premier League goal on 15 August 1992 in a 2–1 win over Manchester United at Bramall Lane. He later returned to the club twice, which reinforced his status as a major Blades figure of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
