Dave Bassett was the manager who rebuilt Sheffield United after one of the lowest points in the club’s modern history. Appointed in January 1988, he could not stop relegation to the Third Division, but he responded immediately by leading the Blades to back-to-back promotions in 1988–89 and 1989–90, taking them back to the top flight for the first time in 14 years. United then stayed in the top division for four seasons and reached the inaugural Premier League era, with Brian Deane scoring the league’s first-ever goal in 1992. Bassett’s time is remembered for resilience, direct football and rapid revival.
