Stephen Rice was a combative, influential midfielder in Shamrock Rovers’ modern revival. Joining ahead of the 2008 season, he became club captain and led Rovers to the 2010 League of Ireland title, their first in years, while also winning the club’s Player of the Year award that season. He remained a key figure in the side that won back-to-back league titles in 2010 and 2011, and he scored memorably against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the Europa League group stage in September 2011. Across his Rovers spell, Rice was associated with leadership, bite in midfield and a big role in restoring the club’s status.
