Michael O’Neill was the manager who helped drive Shamrock Rovers back to the top of Irish football. Appointed in late 2008, he quickly turned Rovers into title contenders, guiding them to second place in 2009 before delivering back-to-back League of Ireland titles in 2010 and 2011. He also led the club to the 2011 Setanta Sports Cup and, most famously, into the 2011–12 UEFA Europa League group stage, the first time a League of Ireland side had reached that level of European competition. In simple terms, O’Neill’s spell was short but transformative, laying down one of the club’s great modern eras.
