The Scotland national football team has a proud but often heartbreaking World Cup history. Scotland first qualified for the tournament in 1954 and have appeared nine times overall, including their return for the 2026 World Cup after a 28-year absence. Despite producing many outstanding players, Scotland hold the unwanted record of being the nation with the most World Cup appearances without ever reaching the knockout stages. The 1970s and early 1980s are often remembered as Scotland’s strongest era. At the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, Scotland were the only unbeaten team in the tournament, drawing with Brazil and Yugoslavia and defeating Zaire, yet were eliminated on goal difference. Four years later in Argentina, expectations were high but an opening defeat to Peru proved costly despite a famous victory over the Netherlands featuring Archie Gemmill’s legendary solo goal. Scotland also qualified for the 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1998 World Cups, producing memorable moments such as David Narey’s goal against Brazil in 1982 and the honour of facing Brazil in the opening match of the 1998 tournament. Under Steve Clarke, Scotland have re-established themselves on the international stage. Qualification for the 2026 World Cup offers a chance to make history by finally progressing beyond the group stage for the first time.
