The Scotland national football team has a proud but often heartbreaking World Cup history. Scotland first qualified for the tournament in 1954 and have appeared nine times overall, including their return for the 2026 World Cup after a 28-year absence. Four years later in Argentina, expectations were high but an opening defeat to Peru proved costly despite a famous victory over the Netherlands featuring Archie Gemmill’s legendary solo goal. Scotland also qualified for the 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1998 World Cups, producing memorable moments such as David Narey’s goal against Brazil in 1982 and the honour of facing Brazil in the opening match of the 1998 tournament.
