The “Hand of God” is one of the most famous and controversial moments in football history. It occurred during the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter-final between Argentina national football team and England national football team at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. In the 51st minute, Diego Maradona challenged England goalkeeper Peter Shilton for a loose ball. Although much shorter than Shilton, Maradona punched the ball with his left hand into the net. The referee and linesman failed to spot the infringement and awarded the goal, giving Argentina a 1–0 lead. After the match, Maradona famously said the goal had been scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God,” creating the phrase that became part of football folklore. Remarkably, just four minutes later, Maradona scored what many consider the greatest goal ever scored, dribbling past five England players and the goalkeeper before finishing. Argentina won 2–1 and went on to lift the World Cup, with Maradona producing one of the greatest individual tournament performances in football history.
