Walter Smith is widely regarded as one of the greatest figures in the history of Rangers F.C.. Across two spells as manager, he won 21 major trophies, including 10 Scottish league titles, five Scottish Cups and six League Cups, making him the most successful manager in the club's modern history. Taking charge in 1991 after Graeme Souness, Smith guided Rangers through the majority of the famous Nine-in-a-Row era. His teams featured legendary players such as Ally McCoist, Richard Gough, Andy Goram, Brian Laudrup and Paul Gascoigne, combining domestic dominance with memorable European performances. After returning to Rangers in 2007, Smith stabilised the club and led an unfancied side to the 2008 UEFA Cup Final in Manchester, one of the club's greatest European achievements of the modern era. He also secured three consecutive league titles between 2009 and 2011 before retiring. Beyond trophies, Smith was admired for his humility, leadership and ability to command respect from players, supporters and rivals alike. For many Rangers fans, he embodies the club's values of dignity, resilience and winning mentality, and his legacy places him alongside Bill Struth and John Greig among the most revered figures in Rangers history.
