John Greig is widely regarded as the greatest player in the history of Rangers F.C. and is affectionately known as “The Greatest Ever Ranger.” A commanding defender and inspirational captain, Greig spent his entire playing career at Rangers, making a club-record 755 appearances between 1961 and 1978. His defining moment came in 1972 when he captained Rangers to victory in the European Cup Winners' Cup, lifting the club’s only major European trophy after defeating Dynamo Moscow in Barcelona. Throughout his career, he won league titles, Scottish Cups and League Cups while earning a reputation for courage, leadership and unwavering commitment. Greig also captained the Scotland national football team and was admired throughout British football for his professionalism and determination. After retiring, he continued serving Rangers as manager, director and ambassador. For generations of Rangers supporters, John Greig represents everything the club stands for: loyalty, pride, leadership and success. His statue outside Ibrox Stadium reflects his legendary status and enduring place at the heart of Rangers history.
