The history of Rangers F.C. is defined by great captains, and few embody the club’s values more than John Greig, Terry Butcher, Richard Gough, Barry Ferguson, Davie Weir and James Tavernier. Across six decades, they have provided leadership during some of Rangers’ greatest triumphs. John Greig is widely regarded as “Mr Rangers.” The club’s record appearance holder, he captained Rangers to the 1972 European Cup Winners' Cup and remains one of the most revered figures in club history. Terry Butcher brought immense determination and leadership during the 1980s revival under Graeme Souness, helping Rangers return to the top of Scottish football. Richard Gough captained the famous Nine-in-a-Row side, leading Rangers through one of the most dominant periods in British football. Barry Ferguson was the heartbeat of the team in the early 2000s, combining technical quality with fierce commitment. Davie Weir provided calm authority and experience, captaining Rangers to multiple titles and the 2008 UEFA Cup Final. James Tavernier has become one of the club’s most successful modern captains, leading Rangers to the 2021 Premiership title and the 2022 Europa League Final while establishing himself as one of the highest-scoring defenders in football history. Together, they represent the leadership, resilience and winning mentality that have defined Rangers throughout their history.
