Rangers, aiming for a record 10th consecutive league title, fell short under Walter Smith. Despite talents like Brian Laudrup, Paul Gascoigne, and Ally McCoist, inconsistency saw them finish 2nd, with Celtic winning the title by two points. Rangers did win the League Cup, but lost the Scottish Cup final to Hearts.
1998–99
Under new manager Dick Advocaat, Rangers rebounded spectacularly, winning a domestic treble: the league, Scottish Cup, and League Cup. New signings like Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Arthur Numan, and Andrei Kanchelskis revitalized the squad, while Barry Ferguson emerged as a midfield leader.
