Alan Kelly Sr was one of Preston North End’s greatest goalkeepers. Joining from Sheffield United in 1983, he became a hugely respected figure during a difficult era for the club. An outstanding shot-stopper with strong leadership and consistency, Kelly often carried Preston through tough seasons in the lower divisions. Despite playing outside the top flight, his performances were so strong that he remained the Republic of Ireland’s first-choice goalkeeper for much of the 1980s. He made over 400 appearances for Preston and became deeply associated with loyalty, professionalism and resilience at Deepdale.
