Tom Finney is Preston North End’s greatest ever player and one of England’s all-time football legends. Born in Preston, he spent his entire professional career with Preston North End FC from 1946 to 1960. Nicknamed the “Preston Plumber,” Finney balanced football with plumbing work early in his career and became admired for humility as much as brilliance. Exceptionally skilful and versatile, he could play almost anywhere across the attack, combining dribbling, creativity, pace and intelligence. He won 76 England caps, starred at World Cups and was respected worldwide despite never winning a major trophy with Preston. His famous “Splash” statue outside Deepdale remains one of English football’s most iconic tributes.
