Tom Finney is Preston North End’s greatest ever player and one of England’s finest footballers. A local Preston man, he spent his entire career with Preston North End FC between 1946 and 1960. Known as the “Preston Plumber” because he worked as a plumber alongside football early in his career, Finney was admired for extraordinary dribbling, balance, creativity and sportsmanship. He could play across the forward line and consistently performed at world-class level despite Preston rarely challenging for major honours after the war. He won 76 England caps, starred at multiple World Cups and became a symbol of loyalty and humility. His famous “Splash” statue outside Deepdale is one of English football’s most iconic tributes.
