Cristiano Ronaldo broke into the Portugal national football team as a teenage winger with flair and pace. He made his senior debut in August 2003 and was quickly selected for UEFA Euro 2004 on home soil, where he announced himself—scoring his first tournament goal against Greece in the group stage and again in the semi-final vs the Netherlands as Portugal reached the final. In the years after, he became a regular starter through the 2006 World Cup cycle, growing from a skillful wide player into a more direct goalscorer. By 2007–08 he was already the team’s main star, setting the stage for his captaincy and record-breaking era.
