The 1971–72 season was one of Partick Thistle’s most famous. Newly promoted to the top flight, Davie McParland’s young, energetic side stunned Scottish football by winning the League Cup, thrashing Celtic 4–1 at Hampden on 23 October 1971. Alex Rae, Bobby Lawrie, Denis McQuade and Jimmy Bone scored in a 37-minute first-half blitz, with Alan Rough in goal. Thistle also finished seventh in Division One and reached the Scottish Cup quarter-finals, cementing their reputation for fearless, attacking football. The campaign remains legendary as the club’s only major cup triumph since 1921 and a defining moment for a generation of Jags fans.
