Peter Shilton’s Nottingham Forest spell (1977–1982) was pivotal to the Clough/Taylor golden years. Signed in 1977 for a then record fee for a goalkeeper, he gave Forest an elite, commanding No.1 as they surged from promotion contenders to champions. With Shilton as the defensive foundation, Forest won the 1977–78 First Division title, League Cups in 1978 and 1979, and the European Cup in 1979 and 1980. His shot-stopping, handling, and authority in tight European ties were repeatedly decisive, and he remains one of the defining figures of Forest’s greatest era.
