Martin O’Neill is closely tied to Nottingham Forest both as a player and (briefly) as a manager. As a midfielder, he played for Forest from 1971–1981 and was part of the club’s golden era under Brian Clough—winning the 1977–78 First Division title and back-to-back European Cups (1979, 1980). He returned as Forest manager on 15 January 2019, replacing Aitor Karanka with the club 9th in the Championship. His reign lasted about five months; Forest finished 9th, and he was sacked on 28 June 2019, with Sabri Lamouchi appointed.
