John McGovern was the captain and midfield engine of Brian Clough’s greatest Nottingham Forest side. Signed in 1975, he became club captain during Forest’s rise from the Second Division to champions of England and Europe, lifting the 1977–78 First Division title, two League Cups (1978, 1979) and back-to-back European Cups (1979, 1980). He played 253 league games for Forest (midfielder; 6 league goals) and is remembered for relentless work-rate, leadership, and doing the “simple” things at an elite level. He was later honoured in the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame and has remained closely connected to the club.
