Kenny Burns was one of Brian Clough’s defining Nottingham Forest signings. Bought from Birmingham City in 1977, he arrived with a “wild man” reputation and as a forward, but Clough and Peter Taylor converted him back into a centre-back—and he became the snarling, dominant leader of Forest’s defence. In 1977–78 he was a standout as Forest won the First Division title straight after promotion, and he was voted FWA Footballer of the Year. Burns went on to win two European Cups (1979, 1980) and two League Cups (1978, 1979) with Forest, forming a key partnership at the back.
