Garry Birtles became a key figure in Nottingham Forest’s golden era after emerging from non-league football to establish himself under Brian Clough; the hard-working striker played a crucial role in Forest’s back-to-back European Cup triumphs in 1979 and 1980, scoring six goals during the 1978–79 European campaign and starting both finals, while also helping the club win the 1979 League Cup; his goalscoring earned him England recognition and a big-money move to Manchester United in 1980, before he returned to the City Ground in 1982, eventually scoring more than 90 goals across his two Forest spells.
