Nottingham Forest won the 1980 European Cup, retaining the trophy they’d first lifted in 1979. In the final on 28 May 1980 at the Santiago Bernabéu (Madrid), Forest beat Hamburger SV 1–0, with John Robertson scoring the only goal and Peter Shilton making key saves to protect the lead. Forest’s run to the final was classic Clough: efficient and ruthless in tight ties. They came through early rounds against Östers IF, FC Argeș Pitești, and Dynamo Berlin, then beat a high-scoring Ajax side in the semi-finals before overcoming Hamburg (who featured stars such as Kevin Keegan and Felix Magath).
