Nottingham Forest won the 1979 European Cup in their first season in the competition. The final was played on 30 May 1979 at Munich’s Olympiastadion, where Forest beat Malmö FF 1–0. The winner came just before half-time: John Robertson drove down the left and crossed for Trevor Francis to head in from close range. It capped an astonishing rise under Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, coming only a year after Forest had won the English league title as a newly promoted side.
